To surf the net, we need many types of equipment:
1. Computer: Any computer can be used to get connected
to the Internet.
2. Programs: Special programs are used on the Internet.
These programs are given free of cost by most service providers.
3. Modem: A modem serves in exchange information
between a computer and the Internet.
4. Telephone Line: All information on the Internet travels
over telephone lines.
JE
5. Speakers: Speakers allow us to hear music, voice, and other sounds
generated by the computer.
6. ISP (Internet Service Provider): ISP is a company that
provides access to the Internet like BSNL, Satyam, Mantra online, jio, etc.
MODEM
A modem is a device that allows a computer to communicate through telephone lines. Modems
provide an easy way to access information on the Internet. The word, modem, is derived from a
combination of the words, modulate, to change into an analog signal and demodulate, to convert an
analog signal into a digital signal. Both the sending and receiving ends of a communication channel
must have a modem for data transmission to occur.
Types of Modems
Internal modems and External modems are the two types
of modems. An internal modem is a circuit board inside
a computer. An external modem is a small box that uses
a cable to connect to the back of a computer. Internal
modems are less expensive than external modems but
are more difficult to set up.
Speed of Modem: The speed with which you can send and receive information through
telephone lines is determined by the modem. Faster modems transfer information more quickly, so
they can save your time and may reduce your online service charges. Modem speed is measured in
Kilobits per second (Kbps). A modem with a speed of at least 56 Kbps should be used.
TELEPHONE LINE
Information is transmitted on the Internet through telephone lines. These
telephone lines are the same which are those used at your home.
When you use a modem to access the Internet, you will not be able to use
the phone line at the same for making telephone calls.
If your telephone and modem share the same line, make sure you turn off
the call waiting for the feature when using your modem, since this feature could
disrupt the connection of your modem.
Other Connections
Telephone line
Instead of using the telephone line, you can also use the other high-speed connections to transmit
information on the Internet. The importance of high-speed connections is that this connection does
not hang up your telephone line while you are on the Internet, so you can make phone calls or use a
fax machine while you are connected.
ISDN: Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a set of standards for
the digital transmission of data over telephone lines offered by telephone
companies. An ISDN line can transfer information at speed from 56 kbps to
128 kbps.
ISDN
CABLE MODEM: A cable modem allows you to connect to the
Internet with the same type of cable that attaches to a television
set. A cable modem can transfer information at a speed of up to
3,000 Kbps. A local cable operator can provide you this service.
Cable Modem
DSL: A Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) uses sophisticated techniques to transmit a greater
number of bytes on a standard twisted-pair
the cable of digital phone line service, offered by
telephone companies. DSL provides slightly higher transfer rates than ISDN lines and thus,
is slightly more expensive. DSL can transfer information at speed from 1,000 kbps to 6000
kbps.
INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS
An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company that gives you access to
the Internet for a fee. There are several types of service providers that
will offer you different services and benefits, different costs. You can
choose from many ISP's in India. The main are: VSNL (Videsh Sanchar
Nigam Limited), Mantra online, Satyam, Hathway, and Tata Indicom.

Internet in different ways. Many service providers offer a certain number of hours per month for a set
fee. Some ISPs offer unlimited access to the Internet for a set fee. Any hidden charges or restrictions

addresses for one Internet account.
